In the state of California, only 61% of English Language Learners graduate from high school. Often that is because coursework in English is extremely challenging for them, yet they get insufficient help to succeed. Mater Dei is one of the few private schools that has its own Language Academy on campus to help English Language Learners become proficient in English. The program at Mater Dei offers intensive help to first year students with continued support through graduation. In addition, they can receive after school tutoring, which is available to all students, not just those with language barriers.
How Students Qualify: First year students who score below a certain level on the language portion of the High School Placement Test are interviewed for placement into the Academy.
Language Academy teachers offer help with homework to any MDCHS student who needs it. Tutoring is offered after school on Monday through Thursday in the Library. In addition to teachers, college tutors are onsite to assist students. There is assistance for any academic subject, and all students are welcome.
