Athletics

MDCE’s Athletics Program provides our students the opportunity to participate in a variety of after-school sports programs to develop their motor skills, sport-specific fundamentals, and a better understanding of sportsmanship and cooperation through a team environment.

The goal of our sports program is to develop confident and motivated student athletes who can express themselves in a positive manner through athletics. Our program’s intention is to also create a culture of fun, teamwork, and leadership through athletic competition.

MDCE participates in the Center City & South Bay Parochial Sports League and competes against the respective programs at a high level.

Diocesan Sports League

The Diocesan Sports League of San Diego offers students the chance to develop athletic skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship in a supportive, faith-based environment. As an active participant in this league, Mater Dei Catholic provides students with several after-school sports programs (found below) that allow them to compete with other schools in the diocese.

High School Sports Collaboration

The Mater Dei Catholic Elementary-High School sports partnership is a collaborative program designed to support the growth and development of young athletes across a variety of sports. High school coaches work closely with elementary and middle school athletes to provide mentorship, skill development, and guidance, helping them build a strong foundation in their respective sports.

Sports that are part of this program:
  • Tennis
  • Baseball
  • Track and Field
  • Strength and Conditioning

Sport Participation Details

Practice

Practices during the respective sports seasons will be held one to three times per-week after school depending on the coaches’ and facility availability. Please follow attire and equipment guidelines set by the coach for practices. To be in compliance with Mater Dei security policies, parents/guardians who decide to stay for the practice must remain in the practice area and cannot roam the campus. Attendance at practice sessions is a requirement for team participation unless excused due to illness or any other unforeseen circumstances.

Volunteer Coaching

Teams for the parochial league are dependent on the availability of parent volunteers as coaches. What this means is if there are no coaches, there will not be a team. Coaches are responsible for being present and leading the student-athletes through practices and games. Coaches are also responsible for keeping track of the issued equipment for practices. In order to coach, parents must complete the school’s volunteer requirements prior to the respective season.
